Job Description

The Managing Director, Government Relations, works under the general direction of the Consulting Practice Group Leaders at Public Strategies.

Responsibilities
  • Direct client strategy.
  • Meet growth and profitability targets established in annual goal-setting meetings.
  • Instill account management best practices on client account teams to develop junior talent.
  • Generate revenue (e.g., identify it, generate it, collect it).
Specific Job Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain relationships with Members of Congress, congressional staff and other federal government officials (requires registration as a lobbyist under the federal Lobbying Disclosure Act)
  • Identify, analyze and track federal legislation and regulatory proposals that could affect client(s)’ business objectives
  • Provide high-level strategic advice and counsel regarding policy trends and implications for the client(s)
  • Manage government relations activities within the Washington office
Required Capabilities
  • In-depth knowledge of Capitol Hill and regulatory agencies
  • Excellent relationship building skills
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills to advocate for client(s)’ initiatives with elected offices and regulatory agencies
  • Management of 5-10 staff professionals
  • Business planning, budgeting, and utilization/realization skills
  • Ability to acquire new clients through network and contacts
  • Ability to grow existing client accounts by value adds
  • Provide high-level strategic advice and counsel regarding policy trends and implications for the client.
  • Provide high-level strategic advice on relationship building and issue education of key policy makers.
  • College degree or equivalent.
Previous Experience
  • 10+ years of experience in a leadership role in Congress (i.e., Chief of Staff, Senior Leadership Staff, Committee Staff Director, Senior Legislative Director); as a Vice President of Government Relations or Public Affairs in a corporation or trade association; or in a leadership role in an executive agency (i.e., Chief of Staff, Assistant Secretary, Senior Advisor).
